Signs of Life Emerging for Southern Maryland's Transit Ambitions

Maryland's Southern region has the worst commute in the US, with residents regularly traveling to Prince George’s, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia for work. The General Assembly passed legislation requiring the completion of the Southern Maryland Rapid Transit Project, which will remove cars from the road and reduce congestion. The $5 million federal earmark will match state funds committed to the project. The transportation project is highly anticipated by local leaders, as it will encourage growth and development in the Waldorf Urban Redevelopment Corridor. The next phase of the project will determine whether light rail or bus-rapid transit will work best for the region.
